The New Appetite-Regulating Receptor Treats Obesity!

Let's identify the new appetite-regulating receptor in the brain. Two separate groups of researchers were successful in finding out the MCH [melanin-concentrating hormone], which has appetite modulating properties. This receptor plays a major role in regulating eating behavior and in future, this could influence the treatment of Obesity as well as eating disorders like anorexia nervosa.

The researchers termed it as an exciting discovery because they can now develop drugs that could treat food consumption disorders. If this finding can help design drugs that block MCH from binding to the receptor, many obesity related treatments would also improve. And the design of drugs that stimulate rather than block the binding action could be part of the treatment for anorexia nervosa.

Obesity is a life threatening weight disorder, which affects one in every ten Americans. Today, there are various weight loss pills in the market, diet programs and plans intended to help obese patients. But most of the treatments are short-term solutions, which lose their charm midway due to the non-reliability of the diet program or the lack of determination from people who undertake the treatment. Researchers have been trying to find a breakthrough in treating obesity, which takes many lives every year. After the success of weight loss pills like Phentermine people look forward to drugs that can cure them of this severe disorder called Obesity.
