Mesotherapy not a Weight-Loss Process
April 27, 2005
According to a recent report, Mesotherapy, touted as
a nonsurgical method of losing weight, has not been
proven to be a safe alternative to liposuction, and
patients should be wary until the procedure is found
to be safe and effective.
Mesotherapy involves injections of medications and
plant extracts into layers of fat and connective tissue
beneath the skin. The injections may include enzymes,
nutrients, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications,
antibiotics, hormones and agents that open blood vessels.
However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have
not approved any drugs for use in mesotherapy, the report
said. In addition, there are no published scientific
studies that demonstrate the safety or efficacy of this
process.
Liposuction remains the only proven method to safely
and permanently remove fat. Although the promise of
a nonsurgical, permanent method for fat removal and
body contouring has its own appeal, the process still
stands to be proven to be the miracle cure.
