Rising
Rate of Obesity in Under-11's
April 30, 2005
According to a Health Report from
the official survey of England," More than a quarter
of children aged between two and 10 are overweight or
obese.
Weight problems among the under-11s have risen by 5
per cent in the past eight years and have more than
doubled in two decades."
Body Mass Index (BMI), is used to measure children's
weight. Overall, 27.7% of children between 2 to 10 are
considered overweight, including 1 in 8 girls who are
classed as medically obese. More than 11.2% of 2 & 3
yr olds is now obese, states the report.
The boys and girls from the most deprived areas of
the country and those with overweight to obese parents
were notably more likely to suffer from weight problems
themselves. Dr Ian Campbell, of the National Obesity
Forum, commented: "These statistics are very worrying
indeed."
