Weight Loss Claims
Challenged by PCRM
April 25, 2005
Equipped with a 30-page petition,
the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine
(PCRM) called on the Federal Trade Commission
(FTC) to the dairy industry from making "false and misleading
claims" in its current advertising campaign, which suggests
that milk leads to weight loss.
PCRM is constituted of group of doctors
and laypersons advocating a progressive health policy.
It argues that the research used to validate the weight
loss claims was limited and conducted by a professor
whose funding came from the dairy industry itself.
According to PCRM, "Claims of dairy
products leading to weight loss were based on unconfirmed
human studies that rely on caloric restriction to show
a weight loss." "Any food could be substituted for dairy
products in this scenario -- French fries, for example
-- and there would be a similar weight loss.
It is the reduction in calories that cause the weight
loss, not the dairy products," it added. The FTC
has been requested to initiate steps to discontinue
the advertisements and issue corrective statements.
