Prove weight loss claims, Bioslim seller told

Johannesburg: There is no proof that Bioslim Fat Attack
makes you lose
weight, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA)
has said.
In a recent ruling the body upheld a complaint against an advert of the Glomail product, featuring slimmers Mandy Strachan and her son Jason who claimed the product had helped them lose weight.
Sue Goldman complained that there was no substantiation to the weight-loss claims and objected to the use of a child in the commercial.
The ASA ruled that evidence submitted by Glomail had not proved the weight-loss claims and called for the advert to be removed immediately. It said the advert was in breach of the authority's code, which required an advertiser to have evidence proving direct or indirect claims made.
"If they are in a position to give us proper evidence, a new ruling will be made."
Glomail said the authority had not ruled that the weight-loss claims were unsubstantiated.
"(It raised) concerns (that) the documentation submitted ex facia did not comply with the provisions of the ASA code," said Marilyn Krige, Glomail's legal representative.
ASA spokesman Dineo Pooe said this was partly true.
"It was ruled they should not use those weight-loss claims in their advertising (of Bioslim Fat Attack) until they can prove it. It is a ruling and not a concern."
The authority could not call for the withdrawal of other adverts for Bioslim products unless a complaint was made and the evidence reviewed.
