First Prescription Obesity Drug
to go Over-the-Counter
Monday, December 19, 2005
In late January, 2006, a Food and Drug Administration
advisory committee will review GlaxoSmithKline's application
to sell a non-prescription 60-milligram dose of orlistat,
which is sold as Xenical fro treating obesity. The diet
pill could become the first prescription obesity drug
to go over-the-counter (OTC).
Xenical, which has been available by prescription in
a 120-milligram dose since 1999 is available without
a prescription in Australia and New Zealand, but it's
not OTC. Xenical is designed for obese people who have
30 or more pounds to lose or those who have less to
lose but also have other health risks, such as diabetes
or high cholesterol. It is far safer than dietary supplements
touted for weight loss. Therefore, Xenical is one of
the most preferred choices for weight loss.
