How to Bell the Fat?
December 21, 2006
An insightful nation wide survey conducted by a US research company has highlighted the overriding opinion of people, about what they consider a formidable health problem facing society and their children today.
The telephonic survey detailing the response from 800
adults, found that nearly 27% named 'obesity', as the
most worrying health factor; inadequate health care
or insurance followed next with 16% strongly advocating
action, while 9% felt the most important health issue
is to address 'nutrition
and unhealthy diets'.
The survey also established the ultimate responsibility of parents in providing the right kind of diet to children, and forming healthy eating habits at a young age. Of course this does not absolve the responsibility of individuals, schools, food manufacturers or the health care providers, who can play an important role in reducing these unhealthy trends.
The National Center for Health Statistics at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention presented alarming statistics that about 66 percent of American adults between the ages of 20-74 and 17 percent of kids between 2-19 years are overweight or obese.
Dr. Leonard Wartofsky, president of The Endocrine Society,
said in a prepared statement, 'Clearly, Americans recognize
the obesity
epidemic facing this country and our children. However,
the poll shows that the public thinks we should address
obesity as a public health issue to bolster the actions
of individuals and families. Health care professionals
and researchers need to help convey the importance of
a stronger public health response to this epidemic.'
