More antioxidants in dark chocolate
OUR HEALTH: CHOLESTEROL WATCH
February 23, 2005
Chocolate lovers have been cheered by recent studies
showing that their favorite food contains something
healthful: antioxidants called flavonoids.
These substances are beneficial because they limit
the negative effects of bad cholesterol and may protect
the arteries.
But not all chocolates contain equal amounts of flavonoids,
according to the February Mayo Clinic Health Letter.
Generally, dark chocolates contain the most, milk chocolates
less and white chocolate none at all.
The difference among different chocolates is significant.
A bar of dark chocolate typically contains more than
three times as many flavonoids as a milk chocolate bar.
Another caveat: Look for the words "hydrogenated''
or "partially hydrogenated'' on the list of ingredients.
Those mean the candy contains fats that contribute to
levels of bad cholesterol.
