YOU don't have to go on a strict diet to lose those extra pounds you have put on over the festive season. A few simple tweaks to your usual diet can help you get rid of that bloated feeling and kick- start the New Year with a new you. Here we show you 12 easy tricks...

1 HAVE a glass of hot water with a squeeze of lemon before breakfast. It will help kick-start your metabolism and get rid of toxins.

2 LEAVE off the salad dressing - it piles on the pounds. A squirt of lemon juice or a splash of balsamic vinegar with a drizzle of olive oil is much better.

3 GO to bed half an hour earlier. Lack of sleep affects the body's levels of corisol, the appetite control hormone, making people hungrier the next day.

4IF you crave the salty taste of crisps as a snack, why not try a handful olives or pretzels? They're lower in fat, calories and salt content.

5 BRUSH your teeth after every meal so you feel like you've finished eating. Also the minty taste in your mouth will make any snacks taste strange and put you off eating them.

6 IF you can't resist eating chocolate, have a few squares from the bar and then hide it or, better still, put it in the dustbin so you won't be tempted to have more.

7 YOU can still have a glass or two of wine - just alternate between alcohol and a glass of water. Not only will it help your calorie count, it will also keep you hydrated and help avoid a hangover!

8 SUBSTITUTE fruit juices for the actual fruit itself - it'll take longer for your body to break it down and absorb energy if, and when, it needs it.

9 CUT out carbs like bread, potatoes and pasta after 6pm, because by the time it takes your body to digest them you'll be in bed and the energy they produce will be stored as fat.

10 DON'T chew gum to make hunger go away. All it does is make your stomach think that food is on the way and starts creating acid to digest it. Have a small healthy snack to get you to the next mealtime.

11 NEVER go to the supermarket when you're hungry. All you'll do is pick up food that you think will satisfy you just then, rather than pick up what you actually need.

12 IF you feel hungry through the day have a glass of water before you reach for the biscuit barrel and wait for half an hour. Then if you are still hungry have something to eat. Often we mistake thirst for hunger and a glass of water can do the trick.
