For weight loss to have a prayer,
exercise more, eat less
January 29, 2005
Q. How do you pray to lose
weight? -- B., Chilton, Wis.
A. We forgot the prayer too, so if you find it, send
it to us right away. We are both overweight and trying
hard to lose that extra person we're schlepping around.
Even so, we wanted to try to answer your question, for
two reasons. First, we wanted to show you that teachers
can know the right thing to do even if they have trouble
doing it themselves. Secondly, we wanted you to know
that you are not alone.
What we know about losing weight has come from the
weight-loss gurus we regularly interview on our radio
show. What they say is embarrassingly simple: You must
exercise more and eat less. That just about covers it.
The fact that it's so easy for most of us to be sedentary,
and so easy to eat junk, is what makes eating less and
moving around more so hard. This is where prayer can
help.
We both pray about losing weight, but we never pray
to lose weight. We pray for the strength to avoid temptation
and for the diligence to stick to an exercise regimen.
To pray to lose weight is to pray for a magic cure,
and prayer is not about magic. Prayer is about hope
and courage.
Don't minimize the difficulty. Most people who diet
do not succeed, and those who do are so dedicated that
we wonder how they got fat in the first place. So pray
for the courage to do for yourself something that will
undo what you did to yourself.
None of us gained too much weight by catching a fat
virus. We got lazy and hungry, and that combination
makes the devil lick his chops. We also usually just
pray for others, so here is our promise: We will pray
for you to lose weight if you pray for us!
