Nasal Spray Could Aid Weight Loss
Spray Mimics Chemical In Brain
July 20, 2004
CLEVELAND -- Some people think a nasal spray could be the key to ending America's obesity epidemic.
While millions of people are losing the battle of the bulge, one company says its treatment could help them fight back, NewsChannel5 reported.
Nastech Pharmaceuticals is testing a nasal spray to treat obesity. Its trials show that people spraying the treatment three times a day can lose up to a pound each week.
The spray works by releasing the same hormone that the brain releases to tell a person he or she is full.
When sprayed before a meal, the brain will think it's already eaten so a person will eat less.
While this may seem like a miracle cure, some like Dr. Steven Quay said there's a better way to purge the pounds. Quay said it's about watching the type of food we eat. He said we're eating too many calories too quickly.
"One of the problems now is in 40 minutes of modern food you can do so much damage," said Quay.
One patient, Andi Piper, agrees.
"Just exercise, and eat good. I think those quick fixes are not healthy," said Piper.
Nastech said it thinks its product will be successful, and said it would cost users about $3 a day.
If approved, the nasal spray could be on the market as soon as 2007.
