A Device that
can Help Fight Obesity
July 04, 2005
London: A device is on trial in Britain that scientists
hope would help fight obesity.
The device, the size of a matchstick is fitted into
the stomach wall. It can fool the brain and make a person
feel as though they have eaten even if they have not,
reports sky news
portal www.sky.com.
Latest figures estimate that the rate of obesity in
British men has increased by two thirds in the last
10 years, while 20 percent of children are overweight.
National Obesity Forum chairman in Britain David Haslam
said: "It is potentially very valuable, as it could
provide another less invasive option other than surgery."
The device is placed beneath the skin of the abdomen
and programmed by a doctor to send signals activating
the stomach's nerves which reduce the feeling of hunger,
said Haslam.
If trials on three patients from the Midlands are successful,
it would prove a huge boost in Britain's ever pressing
battle against widespread obesity.
