Nutrition, A Lifelong Concern
July 4, 2006
Good nutrition, balance diet and moderation in all things that we do are the basis for total health and well-being.
This was declared by Dr. Paulyn Rosell-Ubial, Regional Director of the Department of Health, Region XI during the joint flag ceremony of the Association of Regional Executives of National Agencies (ARENA XI) at Magsaysay Park in Davao City.
Rossel-Ubial made the statement before national government officials and employees in line with the launching of the National Nutrition Month in July 2006.
"We are what we eat" Rossel-Ubial said indicating that too much or too little of the foods that we eat can lead to so many factors triggering diseases and ill-health.
The DOH regional director added that wrong eating habits can lead to high cholesterol that will affect the heart. Too much sweets can lead to diabetes. Too much calories to obesity. Too much salt can lead to kidney diseases.
While too little ferrous leads to anemia, too little fruits could mean beriberi due to lack of vitamin B and scurvy and gingivitis due to lack of vitamin C and the list goes on, she said.
Directo Rossel-Ubial said the key word is moderation even as she recommends to always maintain a balance diet of various food items throughout the day including fruits and vegetables.
