Obesity Epidemic
to Dominate 75 percent Men by 2010
Jun 13, 2005
According to a recent study, three quarters of men
will be overweight in the next five years.
The obesity epidemic has now become severe among men
than women. A survey
and report from the Men's Health Forum says 14,000 male
deaths every year in England are due to weight.
Notably though obesity in women has doubled in 20 years,
it has tripled in men. But denial about being obese
is greater in case of men.
While 60 per cent of women are said to be on a diet
at any one time, nearly 90 per cent of overweight men
say they would not go to a slimming club. More than
half say they would not consult their family doctor.
Two-thirds of men, who considered themselves obese,
admitted that they would not care to diet
even if it may improve their sex lives.
The survey constituted of 1,000 men in England, Scotland
and Wales. It was found that one in five men who consider
themselves overweight faced problems of breath while
walking.
Dr Ian Banks, the Forum President said, "Overweight
and obese men are looking at high blood pressure, diabetes
and cardiovascular disease.
But what kills them more than anything is ignorance."
The report revealed, "Around half of men who actually
are overweight consider themselves to be normal weight
(the reverse is true of women)."
"Likewise overweight men are much more likely
than overweight women to consider themselves physically
attractive."
