Obesity Associated
with Olympics
Jun 04, 2005
According to New Zealand researchers, the 2008 Olympics
could cause an obesity epidemic in China.
Dr Geoff Dickson, researcher at the Auckland University
of Technology says that the major sponsors of the Olympic
Games are car manufacturers and fast-food companies.
He says there is more potential in China than just about
anywhere else in the world to sell more cars and fast-food.
This, consequently, promotes less activity and the consumption
of more energy, and the two combined are the ingredients
for obesity.
The sponsors are bringing the Games into conflict with
the ideals of health and fitness
that we usually associate with the Olympics, he adds.
