Confirming the effectiveness of dairy
products in losing weight, a recent study reported in
Arbor Clinical Nutrition Updates, stated that increasing
calcium and dairy intake when slimming, will increase
weight loss. The study consisted of 34 overweight people
who used an energy-reduced diet to lose
weight.
The energy content of the diets had been reduced by
500 kcal a day and subjects were randomly assigned to
either eat three servings of low-fat yoghurt or three
servings of gelatin a day for 12 weeks. The difference
in calcium intake was that the yoghurt subjects ingested
1100 mg a day, while the gelatine subjects only ingested
500 mg of calcium a day.
It was found that the subjects who ate yoghurt three
times a day lost significantly more body weight, and
experienced a greater reduction in waist circumference
(a measure that is used to check how much abdominal
fat is lost).
A Fat-free dairy product, such as fat-free
or skim milk, skim milk yoghurt, low-fat cottage cheese
etc. is known to prevent bone loss and a reduction in
blood pressure for patients with hypertension.
Equipped with the study results, nutritionists are now
recommending dairy products as part of healthy weight
reduction programme.
