Diabetes Rising
Amongst Kids, Teens
May 11, 2005
A new study has observed that the number of children
and adolescents diagnosed with Type II diabetes has
increased 15-folds in the past generation. Type II diabetes
is a lifestyle-related disease, usually associated with
obesity and inactivity.
Till late, only adults were considered to be its victims.
However, the study conducted by Dr. Pinhas-Hamiel and
her team collected and analyzed all the published research
on Type II diabetes in youth. It revealed that the list
of countries reporting Type II diabetes among children
and adolescents has been expanding. The disease pattern
is known to follow the rise in obesity and inactivity.
Diabetes is a leading cause of heart disease, kidney
failure, blindness and amputation.
All Type 1 diabetics inject insulin. Type 2 diabetics
can control blood sugars with drugs, exercise and by
maintaining a healthy weight, but sometimes require
injected insulin as well. About 2.25 million Canadians
have diabetes, according to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
About 90 per cent suffer from Type 2, and the balance
has Type 1.
