Girls Take up Element Use for Good Performance
May 03, 2005
Steroids are known to enhance athletic performance.
The trade off, however, is the occurrence of adverse
side effects which can jeopardize health. With the rising
graph of teenage steroid users - particularly girls
- the experts have shown concern and Major League Baseball
considering tougher penalties for the banned element
use.
According to the team coaches, it comes as no surprise
because women's and girls' sports have gained popularity.
And just like anything else, once there is an increase
in the competitive nature, girls feel more pressure
to perform, just like boys. As researchers inform, "Girls
who take male hormones can experience menstrual abnormalities,
shrunken breasts, deepening of the voice and increased
body hair.
For boys, steroid use can cause reduced sperm production,
breast enlargement and impotence. And in all adolescents,
steroids can cause permanent stunted growth, liver and
heart problems, extreme mood swings and depression."
The communication, therefore, between the parents, coaches
with the teens about the effects of these elements is
extremely important. Instead of using steroids, exercise
and nutrition be encouraged as the way to stay healthy
and perform well in sports.
