Taskforce Presents
Recommendations for Obesity Concerns
May 16, 2005
The Government's National Taskforce on Obesity has
reportedly recommended a range of sweeping measures
to improve diet and physical health across the country.
Reports this morning informed that the taskforce had
recommended an increase in VAT on unhealthy food and
drinks and a reduction in VAT on healthier products.
A greater focus on PE in schools, an end to fast-food
sponsorship of children's events, a ban on the marketing
of junk food to children and an increased emphasis on
exercise and play areas in town planning has also been
recommended.
The taskforce's recommendations are due to be published
by the Taoiseach this afternoon.
The group was set up in response to growing concerns
about a 67% increase in obesity levels in Ireland in
the past 10 years.
