Weight Loss aids a better sleep for Obese
May 28, 2005
According to a research, Weight Loss
surgery can lead to a better nights' sleep
in the severely obese. The study observed 25 obese patients
with sleep apnoea and found that their sleep quality
and night-time breathing patterns improved after lap-band
surgery to promote weight loss.
Symptoms of depression were also fewer
and they had an improved body image now associated with
shedding the excess kilos. A recent article
in the Medical Journal of Australia estimated up to
17,000 deaths each year in Australia could be attributed
to obesity, yet surgery reduced diseases such as diabetes,
hypertension and obstructive sleep apnoea by 80 per
cent.
Prof Dixon, of Monashs
Centre for Obesity Research & Education informs, obese
people are 10 times more likely to develop sleep apnoea
than adults who are not overweight.
It is also believed that this could be the triggering
event for heart attacks in some people. "The peak time
for dying from heart attack is in the early hours of
the morning and that's a time when sleep apnoea is occurring
in those patients," Prof Dixon said.
