Company Offers Meals For Weight Loss Help
November 10, 2004
BALTIMORE--Here's a novel idea -- lose
weight without cooking. Wouldn't that be nice?
A company new to the Baltimore area claims it can help it happen. It's called "Diet-To-Go" and it takes all the work and time out of eating healthy.
Hilda Levin has a handle on the fitness part of her weight loss strategy. But getting her diet under control has been frustrating.
Levin: "I was not successful with any diets."
But all that's changed.
Levin: "It's made for me. It's like having your own chef. It's the ultimate."
Five months ago, Hilda signed up with Diet-To-Go -- a company in northern Virginia offering healthy, ready-made food plans for dieters.
Daniel Schmidt, vice president of Diet-To-Go: "We're really putting the food right in front of them and saying this is what you should be eating."
Meals include foods like brown rice, Mediterranean pasta salad and eggplant Parmesan -- all portion controlled -- something Hilda used to have trouble with.
Levin: "Now I'm eating the right thing, the right amount."
About 30 percent of the food is prepared fresh. The rest -- mostly meats -- are pre-cooked. It's all portioned out and packaged into individual meals. The process is overseen by a nutritionist and a professional chef.
Schmidt: "There are three plans in the Diet-To-Go program: low carb, our traditional low-fat menu and vegetarian, but there are a lot of options to those as far as the number of days per week and the number of meals per day."
Meals are delivered fresh twice a week to distribution centers. Hilda picks hers up at her gym, Lifebridge Health and Fitness in Pikesville. For an extra charge, meals can also be ordered over the Internet and shipped frozen anywhere in the country.
And the company is hoping to expand to home delivery in our area soon. So how does it taste?
Levin: "The food is fresh. It's delicious."
Cost varies depending on the plan you choose, but figure about $4 to $7 a meal. The menu changes every four weeks, and although the company can't guarantee weight loss, it claims its getting positive reviews.
Schmidt: "Our customer service gets emails everyday about people who've lost 10 pounds, 30 pounds, some cases over 50 pounds."
Levin has been on a low carb "Diet-To-Go" plan for about five months. Together with her fitness plan, she has lost about fifteen pounds.
By the way, a couple of our staff members tried the food, too. They say they liked most of the items.
