Women spend millions of dollars trying to get rid of cellulite. The bumpy bulges strike the thighs, hips and bottoms of more than 80 percent of women.
Unfortunately, the answer isn't found in creams and lotions. But a new medical device may be the solution women are looking for.
Dr. Gregory Nikolaidis of Westlake Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery is using a new, cutting-edge medical device called VelaSmooth. He's the only doctor in Austin performing it as an investigational procedure.
"Some say this may be one of the most effective treatments yet for eliminating cellulite. And it's because it uses three different kinds of technology: infrared light, radio frequency waves and tissue massage," Nikolaidis said.
The tissue massage acts like a vacuum suction on the skin. There's no pain, so patients don't need any anesthetic.
"Every one of the components of this plays a factor. I think the vacuum suction, like with endermology, increases circulation, massages the fibrous bands through there. The heat from the radio frequency penetrates deep, the heat from the laser also penetrates but not as deep," Nikolaidis said.
Experts say VelaSmooth works best when it's combined with the fat melting procedure called mesotherapy.
VelaSmooth is only approved in Canada and Israel. It's now under clinical trials in the United States.
Nikoaidis said a 30 percent reduction in cellulite is visible after eight to 10 VelaSmooth procedures. A set of 10 treatments is $1,500.
