Anti-Obesity Campaign Launched in Delhi
November 30, 2005
The findings of a study conducted by the Delhi Diabetic Research Centre(DDRC) on 3,800 Delhi school children suggests that obesity in school children is alarmingly on the rise and 85 per cent diagnosed with diabetes are obese or overweight
Launching a week-long campaign to create awareness about this dangerous trend on the occasion of the World Obesity Day today, DDRC chief Dr A K Jhingan said concrete steps should be taken to reverse this trend. The campaign has been launched under the Bhagidari initiative of the Delhi Government. Over 17 per cent of the surveyed children were found to be overweight. Some even had high blood pressure and a family history of diabetes.
For controlling obesity, children upto primary level should exercise at least for 150 minutes a week and those upto higher secondary levels at least 225 minutes a week. Fast food culture should be curtailed, and spending too much time before TV and computer should be reduced. Parents and teachers should encourage children to get rid of these habits to reduce the occurrence of obesity in children.
