5 ways to reach your fitness or weight-loss goal
September 5, 2004
1. See the future. Craft a vision of yourself at a new, lower weight. Not only does it spark instant excitement, but it also keeps you motivated, steers you toward positive behaviors and replaces negative thoughts about your body and your abilities. Be precise. Imagine what you look like, what you're wearing, what you're doing, who you're with -- and how you're feeling.
2. Forget willpower. Instead of battling the urge to splurge, make things easier on yourself: Create an environment that's conducive to success. Put healthful foods you love front and center, and don't bring tempting stuff into your house or office.
3. Hit the sack an hour earlier. Skimping on Z's, even for a few nights, leads to imbalances of the hormones that regulate appetite and weight.
4. Seek support. Group efforts work. Not only do support groups offer information and encouragement, but they're also inspiring: Watching other people succeed will steer you toward your own success.
5. Take a whiff. Instead of diving headfirst into dinner, take a few seconds to lean in close and smell the aromas. There's a direct connection between the nose and the part of the brain that makes us feel full. Because your sense of smell stimulates your brain's satiety center, you can trick your brain into thinking you've eaten more than you have simply by indulging it.
