Bouldersmiles Among First Area Dental Practice to Offer New Behavioral Modification System that Promotes Weight Loss without Dietary Changes, Medication or Surgery
bouldersmiles, a leading dental practice focused on cosmetic dentistry headed by nationally renowned dentist Mark Birnbach, DMD, is among the first to bring a novel orthodontic retainer-like device designed to promote weight loss to the Boulder/metro Denver area.
The DDS System is intended to reduce the size of the mouth thereby forcing the user to take smaller bites and eat more slowly. Eating more slowly can trigger the body's natural satiety (full feeling) and the brain then receives a signal to stop eating. Normally, this process takes anywhere from 12-20 minutes. Since people eat so quickly today, they are more likely to overeat before that process is complete. The DDS System is essentially a behavior modification technique developed to promote slower eating habits and smaller bites which can lead to weight loss.
"We are excited to offer this new device to patients throughout the Boulder and Denver area. As a dentist for more than 30 years, with a sole focus on cosmetic dentistry for the past 20, I have witnessed and understand people's struggles and desires to create positive self-image. I have aided in their quest to achieve it using cosmetic dentistry. The DDS System directly appeals to fulfilling those needs for the weight conscious. Most importantly, it a great option for many because it requires no surgery, drugs or dietary changes to meet weight loss goals. We expect the DDS System to be widely accepted amongst our patient population," noted Dr. Birnbach.
The DDS System, which costs about $500, is custom made. It is made of plastic with two small metal pieces that serve as anchors. The DDS System can be completed in about two dental visits.
Recent research conducted among 24 consumers across three dental practices revealed that the DDS System users ingested an average of 27 percent fewer calories and did not demonstrate any increase in hunger. During the course of a 30-day period, study participants lost an average of 5.3 pounds, which was equivalent to three percent of their body weight. Experts believe a five percent decrease in body weight can positively impact overall health.
With obesity continually becoming a more prevalent problem worldwide today, it is expected that DDS System will be well received. About 5,000 systems have been sold nationwide since its May 2004 rollout.
Dr. Birnbach founded Boulder-based bouldersmiles, a practice specializing in cosmetic dentistry. He has extensive training and experience, both in the U.S. and in Europe, and teaches cosmetic dentistry at the prestigious Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies. As a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), Birnbach has provided cosmetic dentistry for participants in their "Give Back A Smile" program for victims of domestic abuse. Dr. Birnbach has been named "Clinician of the Year" three times by the Boulder Dental Study Club. In August 2004, Birnbach was named among the Denver area's top dentists by 5280 Magazine, a leading lifestyle publication focused on the metro Denver area. The magazine ranked 85 dentists spanning various dental specialties throughout the metro Denver/Boulder area.
