Stress free weight loss

September 20, 2004

Thinking of going on a diet? Stress is one of the most common factors that can sabotage weight loss efforts, so joining us this morning is dietician Melissa Buoscio with simple weight loss tips and ways to help reduce stress when it comes to dieting.

Calories Count. Don't be fooled by fad diets and gimmicks. To lose weight you need to cut the calories you take in and boost the calories you burn through exercise. No matter what diet you're following, this is the most important factor in losing weight and keeping it off. By avoiding fad diets and focusing on the basics you will save yourself a lot of unnecessary stress.

Identify Eating Triggers. Pay attention to where those extra calories are coming from and what bad habits could be changed. Zero in on where your individual problems are and get big results from small changes. Planning ahead makes it easier for you to change bad habits.

a. If you tend to skip breakfast, keep something quick and easy on hand such as a granola bar or Vanilla Iced Mochaccino.

b. If you find you are always reaching for a candy bar and soda in the afternoon, plan ahead to have something satisfying but nutritious on hand, such as string cheese and triscuits, or a lowfat milk chug and some oatmeal raisin cookies.

c. If you tend to overeat at dinner, try having small servings and plan to eat a snack later (could be leftovers or something sweet like a Cocoa-Berry Yogurt Tart).

Enjoy 3-A-Day of Dairy. Research indicates that when cutting calories, three servings of dairy (milk, cheese or yogurt) each day can help people lose more weight by burning more fat than just cutting calories alone. The mix of nutrients found in dairy foods, especially calcium, may be responsible for helping the body break down and burn fat.

Take a Time Out. Be sure to take time for yourself - pamper yourself and reward yourself with non-food treats such as a bubble bath or a good book.
